Review: Janus Trio’s Book of Memory

Finally! The chamber group known as Janus is responsible for one of 2010's most delightful releases in any genre, I Am Not. Now the flute/viola/harp trio (Amanda Baker, Beth Meyers, and Nuiko Wadden, respectively) has emerged with a second full-length, Book of Memory, and it is a charmer.

Review: QQQ

One potential hazard of fusing two musical styles is that you can end up with a fence-sitting hybrid—a compromise that satisfies neither camp. QQQ avoids this trap on its debut, Unpacking the Trailer..., a peculiar yet glowingly warm effort, which combines chamber-music intricacy with folksy twang. The disc finds the all-instrumental local quartet—violist Beth Meyers, guitarist Monica Mugan, percussionist Jason Treuting and fiddler Dan Trueman—offsetting an occasionally monotonous timbral palette with inventive and heartfelt compositions.

It was a year of surprises in classical world

i am not; Janus Trio (New Amsterdam)

An exquisite debut CD, "i am not" is full of lush, intricate new music that is easily accessible but stands up well to repeat listening. The trio features Amanda Baker on flutes, Beth Meyers on viola and banjo and Nuiko Wadden on harp; each also sings and plays percussion. The well-curated slate of composers includes Caleb Burhans, Angelica Negron and Jason Treuting of So Percussion.
